When did you commit to an alcohol-free lifestyle?

I started thinking about becoming alcohol free in 2016 after reading this (recently updated) article. Reading it actually prompted me to text a colleague (now my spouse!) about the article. I've kept the link all these years - it really left an impression on me.

But it took a few years (and a few hard lessons) to finally make the jump. One of Andee's busy women needs answer cards simply said "this is not working". My habits and patterns simply were not working anymore. I've been alcohol free since January 23.

Name an unexpected joy(s) since going alcohol-free.

It felt like the hours in the day literally grew. I am so much more productive now. This was true on the more macro level, like discovering an extra 4-5 hours a day to work, clean, prep, and play, but also on the micro level. I ended up spending much less time thinking about drinking once I decided to cut it off instead of attempt to moderate. That freed up a lot of brain space on the minute by minute and hour by hour level.

Mostly, though, it opened up a whole new world, after I realized the growing availability of NA and alcohol free options. I am a "foodie", so losing the flavor profile contributions of alcoholic drinks felt like a big loss. Once I started discovering options...and turning our spare bedroom into a beverage collection, my friends suggested I make an account to document what I was learning. Thus, @Bigdealbevvies was born. I have found community and continuously find new drinks to try. Now, so many of my friends are invested in what I'm learning or are excited to try something with me, too. Plus, it has helped me a more aware sales rep for Orangily!

Name a hard part about being alcohol-free.

Pressure can sneak up on you in social situations, even when you think you've got it handled.

Also, I don't find being alcohol-free a "cost-saving" measure. I probably actually spend more now. But that is important - having a variety of options to choose from helps me feel in control.

When you order a mocktail or alcohol free bev at a restaurant and the waiter says, "you know that doesn't have alcohol in it, right?" like they think you made a mistake.
