When did you commit to an alcohol-free lifestyle?
I got sober on Sept 2, 2014. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and knew if I wanted something different for my life, I had to make a change. My family deserved a better version of me than I was giving them so I went to a twelve step meeting and kept going back. Hardest thing I’ve ever done but one I’m super proud of.
Name an unexpected joy(s) since going alcohol-free.
Waking up New Years Day feeling great. Driving home late from a party wishing I’d get pulled over just to prove I’m sober.
Relationships repaired.
Healed a chronic illness that was masked by hangovers.
Name a hard part about being alcohol-free.
Sometimes people don’t want you to be sober- they just don’t want you to be a drunk. Being sober around drinkers makes them uncomfortable so the invites slow way down. That part can be super lonely.
Favorite alcohol-free drinks:
My go-to is sparkling water, a touch of Grenadine, cherries, and a lime. Pretty much a grown-up Shirley Temple
Advice for anyone considering going alcohol-free:
Try it- what do you have to lose?? if you don’t feel better, have more money, or have a clearer mind in 30 days you can always start drinking again.
Share your story. We need to normalize AF. It still blows my mind that we have to justify why we don’t use the substance. It is so culturally ingrained in us that we’re viewed as a weirdo for not participating. Stop caring what other people think and do what’s best for you!
